Questions and answers. Запитання й відповіді.

23 questions worth asking before you reserve, answered plainly.

The service and where it stands

Is Kinspoken available now?

Not yet. We’re building it, and the first storytellers are planned to start in early 2027. Reserving today is free: you’ll get Holiday Table question cards right away, a printable card to give by December 10, and the planned start date. The price waits for your yes.

What does ‘reserve a holiday gift’ actually mean?

We hold a place for you and the early-access price ($149 for A Year of Stories). It isn’t a purchase, and the printable card isn’t a stored-value gift card. Before your storyteller’s start date, we’ll email the final details and you decide whether to go ahead. If we can’t start by March 31, 2027, we’ll tell you and your reservation simply ends. You won’t owe anything.

How does the interviewer work?

Once a week, your storyteller gets one question in their language: a phone call at a time they choose, a WhatsApp voice note, or a link that opens one big record button. They answer by talking, for two minutes or forty. The interviewer is an automated voice: at the start of every session it says so and asks permission to record, in their language. Weekly questions are recorded by native-speaking voice actors; follow-up questions use a clearly identified automated voice (planned).

The storyteller

Where can the storyteller live?

Almost anywhere a voice note or web link works. In early access, phone calls go to US and Canada numbers. WhatsApp isn’t reliably available in Russia, so storytellers there use the web link instead. Books ship to US addresses. We’ll make sure the setup works for your storyteller before any price comes up.

What if they stop halfway?

That’s fine. They can pause, skip weeks, or stop. We’ll print whatever they’ve recorded; there’s no minimum number of stories.

My parent has memory loss. Is this a good idea?

It can be, gently. Set it up together with them and their caregiver, choose short questions, and let them skip freely. They can stop at any time, and we’ll print whatever they shared.

Translation and languages

Which languages do you support?

We’re starting with Spanish, Russian and Ukrainian: three separate editions, with questions written for each language rather than run through a translator. Our Russian questions are reviewed by a native speaker; we’re hiring native Spanish and Ukrainian editors now, and each edition opens only when its editor is on board. More languages will follow. Tell us which one your family needs.

What if they mix languages?

Keep mixing. Spanglish, a Ukrainian story with Russian dialogue, an English word in the middle of a sentence: we keep it the way it was said and translate it on the facing page.

How good is the translation?

It’s AI-assisted, and then you review it. The side-by-side editor shows the original and the English together, and anything our system isn’t sure about (names, places, idioms) is highlighted for a second look. You can add family words that should never be translated, and a person checks names and layout before every book is printed. If no one in the family reads the original language, add Editor’s Read ($99): a native-speaking editor goes through the flagged passages and all names, places and dates before printing.

It’s not a certified translation: please don’t use it for legal, immigration or court purposes.

My Spanish (or Russian, or Ukrainian) is rusty. Can I still edit?

Yes. You edit the English. The original stays exactly as your storyteller said it, apart from removing ums and repeats if you choose. If an English edit changes the meaning, we flag it so the two sides don’t drift apart.

Is this a certified translation?

No. Kinspoken translations are for family reading. Please don’t use them for legal, immigration or court purposes.

The book and the audio

What does the book look like?

An 8 x 10 inch hardcover, full color, with up to 240 pages included. Each story opens across two pages, their language on the left and English on the right, with photos, captions and a QR code. A ‘Words we keep’ glossary sits at the back. The layouts on this site are examples; our first printed proofs are in progress.

How does the QR audio work?

Every story has a small code. Point a phone camera at it and the original recording plays on a private page on kinspoken.com. Only people with the link (or your family PIN, if you set one) can listen. You can download every recording at any time.

When does the book arrive?

Whenever you’re ready: after ten stories or after a full year. Once you approve the final proof, most books should arrive in about three weeks (our target). We’ll give you a firm ship date at that point, and if we miss it you can cancel for a full refund.

Privacy and consent

Will you clone their voice or use an AI voice for them?

No. We never clone or synthesize a storyteller’s voice. The only voice that tells their stories is theirs.

Do you use our stories to train AI?

No, not ours and not anyone else’s. We only use service providers whose terms exclude training on your content, and we’ll publish the full list of them before the first recording.

Who can see or hear the stories?

Only people you invite. Stories are encrypted in storage. The storyteller can also mark anything ‘not for the book’, and it stays out of print.

How do we delete everything?

Email hello@kinspoken.com from your account address, or use ‘Delete everything’ in settings. We delete recordings, text and photos within 30 days (backups within 35) and confirm by email.

Prices, refunds and shipping

How much does it cost?

Early-access prices: A Year of Stories is $149 (one storyteller, one hardcover, US shipping included). Family Edition is $249 (three hardcovers plus an audiobook edition in their voice). Extra hardcovers are $59 each, and Editor’s Read is $99. An optional second year is planned at $99. We honor these prices for everyone who reserves before February 28, 2027.

What about refunds and ship dates?

Reserving is free, and you can cancel by replying to any email. Once you pay, you can get a full refund within 30 days of payment, for any reason.

If your storyteller stops early, we print whatever they recorded (there’s no minimum), or pause the year at no cost. When you approve the final proof we give you a ship date; if we miss it, you can cancel for a full refund. We follow the FTC Mail, Internet or Telephone Order Rule for every paid order.

If Kinspoken ever closes, you’ll get at least 90 days’ notice and a full download of every recording, story and photo.

What isn’t included?

It’s not a certified or legal translation: please don’t use it for immigration, court or other official purposes. There’s no live human interviewer: the interviewer is automated, and human review covers names and layout unless you add Editor’s Read.

No voice cloning, no AI narration in the storyteller’s voice and no ‘talk to grandma’ chatbot. No ghostwriting beyond light editing for readability, and no photo restoration, genealogy research or DNA services.

In early access, phone calls go only to US and Canada numbers and books ship only to US addresses. Books over 240 pages are quoted before printing.

The company

Who’s building this?

Kinspoken is built for families whose best storyteller speaks a different language from the grandkids. We’re building the book we couldn’t find: her words on the left, English on the right, her voice one scan away.

Kinspoken is built by {{FOUNDER_NAME}} and is a trade name used by {{LEGAL_ENTITY}}. We’re new, so there are no reviews here yet, just how it works, what it costs, and what we promise. Write to hello@kinspoken.com; we answer every message ourselves.
